Steve Jobs: No One Uses Java
Written by Chad on January 15th, 2007James pointed me to this blog post this morning.. since I had been wondering how well WWJava would run on the iPhone (you will note I have not said word one about that “future flop”). Well, this post has a very interesting quote from Jobs..
Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”
Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
Ok, Java is worthless and no one uses it…
Hey Jobs.. ever hear of a project called World Wind Java? Has a few million dollars for development and can run as a standalone application AND in a web browser.
Java is developed for and IS used by many, many people. Thank you for making me not like Apple anymore (well, the Apple commercials have made me hate Apple just by being so stupidly annoying).

Check out Virtual Lab/Virtual Microscope (it has gone by both names), it’s a NASA Learning Technologies program that is Java based and it’s really cool. I have shown this to my school and it’s actually easier to show than World Wind because it will run off my flash drive, so long as the computer has the correct Java runtime environment. How is Java a, “big heavyweight ball and chain” if I can carry it my pocket?
Here are the addresses to the two Virtual Lab/Virtual Microscope websites.

Easy there. Jobs is referring only to Java browser (cr)applets which used to afflict all of us before AJAX caught fire.

Badly done applets I can see.. but there are good Java applets as well (World Wind Java for one).
I still hold my opinion that it will not do as well as everyone thinks it will.
