Government Getting Involved With Google’s Choice of Imagery?

Written by Chad on March 31st, 2007

Ok, this is just getting a little strange… Google is a company that can basically do what they want.   They chose to update some imagery of New Orleans to older imagery to show what the area use to look like.

But because of this.. even now the government is asking why according to CNN.

The House Committee on Science and Technology’s subcommittee on investigations and oversight on Friday asked Google Inc. Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt to explain why his company is using the outdated imagery.

That is just a bit much IMHO.  Just point everyone that wants the imagery to NASA World Wind and the 2005 Hurricane Imagery and everyone can go back into their happy places ;)

It is strange that Google has not commented on this yet. I think it is important to find out why they used back-dated imagery for the area. It puts their “don’t be evil” slogan to the test.

Congress is angry because Google Earth is now so ubiquitous and well-liked that the picture it presents *is* reality. It is so common-place that the government is now arguing that it is a public service.

Again, Chad, please stick to what you’re good at. We all want to know more about NASA World Wind. We don’t need to read, on a near-daily basis, your childish foot-stamping about Google Earth being more popular than NWW. Get over it.

Sheesh.. I am even supportive of Google doing what it wants to do and people complain :P

This isn’t just a World Wind blog, so I can go on tangents once and a while. But I will be posting more on WWJava as the alpha testing moves into beta testing.

I personally think this is a good point to bring up and it example of where World Wind excels. I enjoy Google Earth, particularly for the collaborative environment it offers, but World Wind gives a much more comprehensive global imagery dataset if you are not bent on getting sub-meter resolution. Actually, in some places (Vermont) it does have better high-resolution imagery.

Congress should focus on getting technologies such as World Wind and Google Earth to our armed forces.

Ahhh, but who is to say that World Wind is not used in the Military?

Actually, it is used.. heavily anymore. But 95% of the cases.. I don’t know beyond that they are using World Wind. I think I will post a slide from my presentation I did last week.

In the case of the WWJava Alpha Testing it is a lot of “We can’t say”.. but you can make some damn good guesses :)
