Screen Shots With Google Earth
Written by Chad on April 20th, 2007As I rarely use GE, I had a bit of a problem today when getting some screen shots of the Mogadishu KML in use. Mainly.. I could not take a screen shot of GE. I figured at first it was just my computer acting up and tried another open window .. but there I could get a screen shot.
Well, this is confusing I was thinking.. So I tried closing GE and then started GE in OpenGL mode, did a print screen and I got a screen shot! Well, why could I now and not before. Closed down GE and started it back up in DirectX mode, took a screen shot and nada.
Ok, so running GE in DirectX mode will not allow for a screen shot for whatever reason. But in OpenGL mode I can get screen shots. I can screen shot other DirectX enabled apps.. so anyone have ideas why GE doesn’t?

Hi Chad, it sounds like a problem with your video card settings for DirectX. I’ve never seen that one before. Have you tried using something other than Windows (Print Screen) to save the screenshot? Like for example the “File->Save Image…” option within Google Earth? Or, some other program to do a window or screen capture? I use IrfanView myself and it works in either mode quit nicely – plus Irfanview makes it easy to crop, resize, sharpen, etc.

File -> Save Image works fine .. but if I had a balloon open, it would close the balloon.
Well, I could screen cap other DX apps just fine, including media player. Didn’t think about infranView, have it installed but didn’t use it (Forgot about it actually xD).

I have had a similar issue doing screenshots of full screen DVD playback. Turned out to be related to the hardware acceleration in DirectX. Somewhere in your display settings there is a slider to control DirectX hardware acceleration from one extreme to the other. When lowered to practically disabled I could grab images of the DVD otherwise I just got a black image (it is a while ago, but this is how I recall it).
