Gettysburg Electric Map, Turned Off

Written by Chad on May 5th, 2008

If you have ever been Gettysburg, PA you have most likely been in the original visitors center and have shelled out the extra money to view the “Electric Map of the Gettysburg Battle”.  A large scale map that is inset in a room that you would sit around and watch the three days of battle through thousands of little light bulbs.

But, as of April 13th, the map has been turned off and will soon be disassembled and put into storage in favor of a newer technology and interactivity. Some people though, are not happy about this map being put away and would like it to be put into the new visitor’s center.  CNN has a little more on this topic as well today.

The park service has not ruled out resurrecting the map in the future and is willing to turn it over to any nonprofit group that would use it for educational purposes, Lawhon said.

“We haven’t had any really serious interest,” she said, “but we have gotten a couple nibbles.”
