CNN Map on Auto Industry Jobs

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

I always have a good laugh when I see people saying that if the auto industry would collapse, nothing would happen.  People just have so little understanding at just how intertwined the auto industy is with everything else (And I doubt we could take the loss of a few hundred thousand jobs in a short period of time).

CNN has an interactive map online that shows just how many auto related jobs there are in each state in the US.

You Can Make More Flipping Burgers

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

I saw an interesting job posting today that got my attention: Mobile Mapping Van Operator

The posting has a great writeup about the company.. three paragraphs just about how great working for Tele Atlas North America is.

The Tele Atlas culture reflects our core values: passions for people, fanatical about customer service, operate with integrity and accountability and obsessed with excellence.

Wow! Great!

So, if you are a strong collaborator, possess a passion for excellence and are looking for an employer who will challenge, respect and reward you, we invite you to join Tele Atlas and contribute to our continued success.

Alright then, you have my attention now.

Requirements:
• Must be a college or university graduate; Geography Major or related field preferred.
• Ability to travel without restriction for an extended period of time.
• Ability to work long hours and 5-6 days a week.
• Clean driving record, motor vehicle check will be conducted.

Ok then, a lot of time on the road.. a given considering you are driving a van all day.  Should make a nice paycheck then.

Pay is approximately $11.00 per hour.

WAIT A SECOND!  Slam on the breaks.. $11/hr for at least 40 hours a week?  With a degree?  What happened to “challenge, respect and reward you”?

As someone said: “that’s not even intern pay these days

At the local Burger King you can be flipping burgers at a starting pay of $13/hr and that is with NO degree.

Why not call the job description what it really is?  “Stupid driving monkey needed for grueling, boring job”, at least the pay will match the job then.

Burger Flipper
Even KFed can drive a van.

Developer Needed for “Quick Plug-In Work”

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Check this forum post if you have some free time and want to also make some money.

Plug-in (1): Shapefile to XML

The purpose of this plug-in is to eliminate the need for an associated shapefile to be kept on the users computer while providing a robust set of selections for the user to choose from to customize the output. In essence, I would like a GUI interface that allows for the user to setup all the possible XML tags without having to actually edit the XML document.

Plug-in (2): Data extraction Plug-in
This plug-in is probably the harder of the two, but perhaps someone is already working on something similar. The purpose of this plug-in is to use a bounding box or polygon to select active layers from WW (be they satellite data or user input add-ons) and then export them as georeferenced images for use in another program. The format of choice would probably be GeoTiff or ESRI Grid.
